Friday morning, Owen had his 5 year old check up with our pediatrician. I'd been dreading this day because I knew that multiple vaccinations were in store for our big boy. Owen is usually a pretty resilient kid, but he does have a flair for the dramatic when it comes to sickness and pain. :) But let's start with the good news...he's very healthy! His vision and hearing tests came back perfectly. He weighs 49 pounds (90th percentile) and is 48.125" tall (OVER 97TH PERCENTILE!!!!). He got to pee in a cup for the first time, which he thought was just craaaazy! His reflexes, glands, breathing, social development, and physical development are all great. We are so blessed to have such a healthy and happy boy!
After all the fun stuff came the not so fun stuff. It all started with a finger prick for blood testing. Cue tears and drama. After the bandaid went on and the nurse told him to pull his pants down and lay on the exam table, things got much worse. I basically had to hold him down while he screamed and cried at the top of his lungs while he got FIVE vaccinations! Bless his heart. I wish they could somehow combine the vaccines into just one or two shots. It really is like torture getting that many injections at once. It made me feel so sad for little Benjamin having to get multiple shots like that at his young age. Luckily Owen recovered quickly and hobbled out of the doctor's office stiff-legged and subdued. My mom, Gran, treated him to a kids meal at Burger King and took him home to relax and play. This seemed to be just what he needed, because by the time I got home from work he was in great spirits and getting around just fine. He does have to get one more vaccine in August before he starts kindergarten, but we're not going to talk about that just yet.
In happier news, Owen got a great surprise this week in the mail when a box from Uncle Minor arrived carrying a pillow pet all for Owen! No more "borrowing" Sparkles from Ben. Owen ran down the hall to put Sparkles into Ben's room and then came barreling back to the dining room to devote all his attention to our new pal, whom he has decided to name Fluffy...
Welcome to the family, Fluffy!
